Labiaplasty
A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping or altering the labia minora (the inner lips) or labia majora (the outer lips). It is typically performed to reduce the size or improve the appearance of the labia, repair prior injuries sometimes caused during child birth, alleviate discomfort or irritation, or address asymmetry between the labia.
Reasons for Labiaplasty:
Cosmetic Concerns: Some individuals may seek labiaplasty to achieve a more symmetrical or aesthetically pleasing appearance of the genitalia.
Functional Issues: Enlarged or elongated labia minora can cause discomfort or irritation during physical activities, sexual intercourse, or while wearing tight clothing. Labiaplasty can help alleviate these symptoms.
Congenital Conditions: In some cases, individuals may be born with labial irregularities or asymmetry, which can be corrected through labiaplasty.
Postpartum Changes: Pregnancy and childbirth can cause changes to the appearance and function of the genitalia, including stretching or enlargement of the labia. Labiaplasty may be considered to restore pre-pregnancy aesthetics or alleviate postpartum discomfort.
What is a labiaplasty?
A surgical reduction typically of the labia minora. This is an outpatient procedure that happens in-office at Durham Women’s Clinic.
Why get a labiaplasty?
Patients may decide to look into a labiaplasty for functional or aesthetic reason, sometimes both! Functional reasons typically are related to the size of the labia minora causing discomfort while partaking in sexual intercourse or exercising.
What is the procedure?
During a labiaplasty procedure, the surgeon will typically remove excess tissue from the labia minora or labia majora to achieve the desired size and shape. The specific surgical technique used will depend on the individual's anatomy, goals, and surgeon's preferences.
The procedure is usually performed in the privacy of our office using both local and IV anesthesia as an outpatient surgery, allowing the patient to return home the same day.
What is the recovery process like?
After labiaplasty, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated area. Pain medication and cold compresses can help alleviate these symptoms. It's essential to avoid strenuous activities, sexual intercourse, and tampon use during the initial recovery period, which typically lasts for several weeks.
